Touring with Gibbo:
Local Tour # 6
Ashby to Woodburn via Pacific Hwy. [A1] (ugh), turn left across the bridge (sign to Lismore) and immediately right onto Bank St.. This becomes Kilgin Rd.. At the T intersection turn right onto Broadwater Rd. and left onto Bagotville Rd.. This becomes Wardell Rd..
Continue into Alstonville, which is a lovely town. Then you have to do a loop to get onto the Bruxner Hwy.[B60]. You might decide to have morning tea here. From where ever you stop there find Teven Rd., turn left onto Ballina Rd., then right onto The Bruxner Hwy. Continue west and turn right (it's tight) onto Richmond Hill Rd., and left onto Bangalow Rd.[B62] It has gorgeous views. This will bring you into Lismore. Turn right at the Roundabout into Union St., left at Molesworth St., right at the roundabout at Woodlark St. and ride over the Fawcett Bridge, left at the roundabout onto Terania St.. This becomes Nimbin Rd.. The road between Lismore and Nimbin has lovely views, as below, but the road itself is not good with lots of potholes. However, some kind soul has painted rings round the potholes so you can see them more easily. Take it easy. Nimbin has a long history of ‘alternative’ lifestyles. It’s a really odd town, but worth a look. You will be offered drugs.
Continue north on the same road, now called Blue Knob Rd., (no improvement in road quality) turn right onto Kyogle Rd. and wind you way to Uki. On the way the is a tiny place called Sphinx Rock, (slow down when you see the Mt. Burrell signs) which has quite a good cafe with wifi. Not a bad spot for lunch. Continue onto Uki is a lovely little ‘oldie worldie’ town. North of Uki turn right onto Smith's Creek Rd., then right onto Stokers Rd., this joins up with Tweed Valley Way . This will take you south where you will join the Pacific Hwy. [A1] at Billinugel. Continue south on the A1 and take the Ewingsdale / Byron off ramp.
You can either turn right at the roundabout and take the Myocum Rd., turn left on Possum Shoot Road, then merge right to Coolamon Scenic Drive and turn left onto Friday Hut Rd., then left onto Lismore Rd., back to Lismore. These roads are back country lanes. They are all tarred, but, take it slow and enjoy the country side. Alternatively, you can turn left and take the road into Byron Bay, if Byron interests you. Personally, I would not bother. Byron has been too successful for its own good. Good luck finding a park, even for a bike.
Assuming you made it back to Lismore, take the same route through Lismore to Union St., cross the bridge, then turn right into Casino St., which becomes the Kyogle Rd., turn left onto Naughton’s Gap Rd., and follow this into Casino. Turn right at the T intersection into Bruxner Hwy/ Johnston St., then left at the roundabout onto the Summerland Way[B91]. Follow the Summerland Way through Whiporie, turning right south of Whiporie into Pringle’s Way to Lawrence. Turn left to the ferry, taking the ferry crossing and then left to Maclean and then to Ashby and Squeakygate Retreat.
Sites to see:.
• Lovely scenery thoughout quite a lot of the ride.
• The very odd town of Nimbin. It's worth seeing, even though I always think it's a little sad. Alternative culture gone wrong.
• Uki is a gorgeous little town. You will like it there.
• Byron, if that's your thing. There is also a nude beach north of Byron at Tyagarah, if that's you thing.
• For the most part really interesting roads.
